Steps to build your personal brand

People buy from people.

This is why if you are building your career based on your expertise, then you need to be the face (and soul) of your brand. In fact, even if you trade under a business name, and have a small team, this is still the same. People still buy from people, you need to show your audience the person behind the brand.

Before the mood board, the website, or the logo you need to know who your brand is, and what your brand stands for. So how do you know what components of your personality should become part of your brand? Well, they are the strengths, values and skills that are uniquely you. But knowing what they are, is easier said than done.
Over the years, I have developed my own method to help change-makers to build crystal clear, personal brands. My RISE method is a process that helps you define the parts of YOU that make you a standout personal brand. (Side note, this is also the same process that I took myself through to help me understand who I was at a time when I desperately needed it).

Let's take a quick look at the RISE process.

[R]Recognise your strengths
A good personal brand is.... personal. It is about who you are at your core. This step is all about learning what are your personality strengths, natural gifts, and learned talents. These traits become the foundation of your brands' unique selling proposition. No one else has the same combination of strengths, so this is how you separate yourself.
[I]Identify your impact
Does your work feel aligned to what you believe matters most? What is your purpose? What's your vision and mission? These questions are core to who you are, and should inform your brand. When your work aligns with who you are then you feel more fulfilled. In this stage of the process, we reflect on your values, your passions, and what impact you want to make on the world. Studies have shown that people prefer to buy from brands whose values align with their own. So, stand for something.
[S] Shape your signature offer

Once the introspection of the first two steps is complete, then start to incorporate what we found, into your work. What do you actually offer and to who? Does it maximise your strengths and align with your vision? How can you transform your offer, and bring more of you into it? Can you say it as an elevator pitch?
[E] Express your brand

Now that we know who you are, what you do, and why, we need to share that with the world. This step in the process is all about:
  • getting clear on your brand 'tone of voice'
  • understanding your content pillars
  • translating your brand values into visuals, and
  • tools for becoming more visible.

Over the next few weeks, I am going to be sharing some of the tools that I use in the RISE brand process. I invite you to allocate yourself some time and give these tools a go. Even if you aren't building a business. Give it a go. My mission is to empower women to embrace their own unique stories and strengths. That way you can build confidence in yourself.

Because when women thrive, the whole damn community around them does too.
