10 Tips for looking better in photos

This weekend I am heading to ProBlogger, a blogging conference on the Gold Coast. It's only an hour away from home, but boy, it kinda feels like I am heading off on an uncharted adventure. I love people and I am a natural extravert, but still, hanging out with so many amazing women (and men) who are working so hard to achieve their dream is totally inspiring (and more than a little overwhelming).

One of the ongoing discussions in some of my facebook groups is about 'what to wear' and the preparations that folks are doing; hair appointments, eye brow waxing and so on. We thrive in an online world, a place where our visual presence and our voice are crafted. We get so nervous to meet people in the flesh. While it's a bit sad that this is the case, I am completely the same. I mean, what about if people see the real me and it's not what they expect? What about if that god awful thing happens and someone takes a photo, I get tagged and it's an image that doesn't suit my very specific ideals of what I should look like?

While the truth is that people don't think as much about you as what you are thinking about yourself, I still thought that there might be value in sharing 10 tips to looking better in photos. That way, when you do relax, meet some awesome contacts, and take plenty of snaps for Insta or Facebook you aren't stressing about what you look like!


So here they are, in no particular order. My top 10 tips for looking better in photos at blogging conferences...

  1. Never be the one standing closest to the camera…you will look disproportionately large. But if you do lose the battle to who is at the back of the group shot, angle your hip behind the person next to you.
  2. Try for a relaxed, not tense smile.. close your eyes, breath out, relax the tension in your mouth, open your eyes just before the click, and don’t forget to smile with your eyes as well as your mouth (a smiling mouth and dead eyes 'aint pretty).
  3. Don’t stand with your arms flat to your side soldier style. Make space between the side of your body and your arms, it slims your arms and accentuates your waist. Think hands on hips or holding a glass… my general rule is, if it bends, bend it (ie. elbows & knees).
  4. Many of us have a ‘better side’. If you know what it is use it as your super power. Not sure? Practice in the mirror when no one’s looking.
  5. Avoid the dreaded ‘double chin’ by pushing your chin forward a few more centimeters than normal. You’ll feel like a turkey but it will help elongate your neck.
  6. Stand up tall, your relaxed ‘standing in the coffee shop queue’ posture will not help you at all.
  7. It’s Saturday, the morning after the night before, and you are feeling a bit worse for wear… do like the fashion editors do and put on the sunnies.
  8. Avoid standing straight on or square to the camera. Many red carpet starlets will use the ¾ turn with the front leg extended. It’s not necessary to be super posed, but if you can angle your body from the camera and put your weight on the back leg it will help
  9. I know it’s hard but seriously, try to have fun and relax. Pull a goofy face, wink or do whatever your beautiful natural self would do. A stiff face and tense smile is the worst.
  10. Don’t forget that whoever wants to get a photo of you wants to remember the occasion, the good time that you were all having together and to share the fact that they were spending time with your gorgeous self. You might not love being in photos, but really, it’s the memories that matter ultimately.

So that's it. My ten tips for looking better in photos. They aren't hard, and hopefully with these in mind you'll be a bit less worried about how you look on the day and much happier to jump in there, into the photo and into the memories of those around you!
